Railway Nostalgia

Date Added 04/07/2017

I am something of a rail enthusiast, and have been since I was 11 years old. I turned 60 last October and my wife and daughter gave me my dream present when they booked me to drive a train on the Severn Valley Railway this June. Ok, it’s a Heritage Class 52 Diesel as opposed to a steam engine, but as a kid I loved these locos.

Barry Cobb SVRThere’s definitely a ‘romance’ about a big oily steam engine which appeals to young and old, male or female.  For me it was the lure of rekindling our childhood memories and indulging in a day of nostalgia. For the kids the trains are just magical – just look at the popularity of Thomas the Tank Engine and the Heritage Lines’ ‘Santa Specials’.

At Johnsons, we include a wide range of Heritage Railways in our excursions and holiday programmes so you too can relive treasured childhood memories, or relax and experience a day of nostalgia whilst you enjoy the picturesque countryside views.

Our excursions also include fantastic nearby attractions, which is a great way to enhance the day. Whether it’s visiting beautiful gardens with the Bluebell Railway; exploring a safari park with the Severn Valley; or discovering a heritage attraction such as the Loughborough Bell Foundry on the Great Central Railway; there is something for everyone to enjoy. Most railways also offer good platform accessibility, delicious refreshments, and feature special events.

Below we have listed some of our fantastic holidays and day excursion which feature railways, so you can 'Enjoy the views and treasure the memores'.
