It's Day 2 of National Coach Week!

Today, we're shedding light on a commonly misunderstood aspect of transportation: Coach travel. Often overlooked or even criticised for its environmental impact, we're here to set the record straight. 

Debunking Misconceptions 

It's a prevailing misconception that coach travel is detrimental to the environment. Many people see these large vehicles, often powered by fossil fuels and assume they're significant contributors to carbon emissions. However, the truth may surprise you. 

Contrary to popular belief, coaches are among the cleanest and greenest vehicles on our roads. On average, the carbon dioxide emissions per passenger per journey are approximately: 

• 5 times lower than air travel

• 6 times lower than car travel

• 1.5 times lower than rail travel

The Impact of Coach Travel 

Consider this: one coach load of passengers can keep up to approximately 50 cars off the roads. This translates to significant savings in carbon dioxide emissions. When calculated per person, coaches can slash greenhouse emissions by up to 75% compared to even the cleanest hybrid cars. 

Paving the Way to Net Zero 

As we strive towards a Net Zero future, coaches will play a pivotal role. Surprisingly, just 3% of carbon emissions come from coaches and buses, compared to a staggering 56% from cars and taxis. 

Imagine the possibilities: a mere 15% increase in coach passenger journeys by British people each year could lead to approximately 47 million fewer cars on the road. This not only saves over a quarter of a million tonnes of carbon dioxide but also significantly reduces congestion, minimising time spent idling in traffic and further lowering emissions.
