Steering Towards Safety: National Road Safety Week 2023

Date Added 19/11/2023

As the wheels of progress turn, our roads become increasingly crowded with vehicles of all shapes and sizes. While these roadways facilitate our daily lives, they also present a significant challenge to our safety. In light of this, Road Safety Week in the UK serves as a crucial reminder to reflect on our driving habits and collectively work towards creating safer streets for everyone.

Here at Johnsons, we know that driving on the roads can be a dangerous place that’s why our Training Manager - Peter Lloyd not only works with the charity organisation IAM IRoadsmart – “Institute of Advanced Motorists” as a National Observer to improve road safety, but also oversees training with his team here at Johnsons in efforts to improve drivers skill sets and become the thinking driver working on defensive driving techniques from resources such as the Highway code and Roadcraft.

Our drivers recieve training on multiple things such as how to safely drive a coach, beware of their surroundings and keeping them upto date on laws and regulations twice a month to ensure they are upto the highest standard possible alond with practicing certain manoeuvres, learning different styles of driving such as; defensive - where you are aware of hazards and learn how to prepare yourself for others unpredictable movements and, Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED) to educate and re-educate our drivers on how to drive to ensure they are getting the most fuel efficiency whilst reducing journey times, driver stress ect.

As we navigate the intricate web of roads in the UK, let us remember that safety is a collective responsibility. By adopting simple yet effective road safety measures, we can ensure that our journeys are not only efficient but, more importantly, safe for everyone involved. This Road Safety Week, let's pledge to be vigilant, responsible drivers, and pedestrians, contributing to the creation of roads that prioritize safety above all else.

We must all do what we can to improve road safety specially with the winter coming. You can do little things like ensuring your car is ready for winter by checking items like tyre condition, air pressure to ensure you can stop effectively when you need to and your tyres can displace water effectively. Windscreens and all glass are clear before setting off on a journey and using tips like “spoken thoughts” to keep your attention on the road.
