End of year school trip ideas

Date Added 06/06/2023

After the ups and downs of the last few years, the 2022/23 academic year has felt the closest to ‘normal’ for a very long time.

No doubt everyone, from staff to pupils, are exhausted from the enormous effort put into lessons and exams.

Which is why the good old tradition of an end-of-year blowout is so valuable.

So much mental energy is focussed on the classroom that the opportunity to release some tension does so much good for your students. And with that in mind, Johnsons Coaches have curated a collection of trip ideas to reward everyone’s hard work.

Theme Parks

What better way to ‘let it all out’ than to scream at the top of your lungs whilst being catapulted through the air at ridiculous speeds – with g forces so high you involuntarily put on a brilliant Shar Pei impression?!

Theme Parks offer such a huge variety of rides and attractions, regardless of whether you have a need for speed or prefer a more leisurely day out.

Below are the Johnsons team’s top picks, with a little nod to our favourite rides:

Drayton Manor

Nestled away in North Warwickshire, just south of Tamworth, Drayton Manor has been exhilarating visitors for nearly 75 years in one way or another. Now with over 50 rides and attractions, students will be spoilt for choice during their visit.

A particular favourite is Maelstrom, a swinging gyro that will take you in every direction possible.

And for those of a more relaxed disposition, there is the River Rapids. A fun jaunt through a vibrant harbour in your very own boat.

Alton Towers

The top dog of Theme Parks in the UK, this is where the fastest, most stomach-churning, and adrenaline-inducing rides live.

But for the younger ones, Alton Towers has the Gangsta Granny ride – inviting riders to pull off the greatest jewel heist in history!

West Midland Safari and Leisure Park

Perhaps not as thrilling as the previous two entries on the list but West Midland Safari and Leisure Park still has plenty on offer to dazzle and amaze.

Combining the thrill of rollercoasters and the enchantment of a safari, our favourite place is the Sumatran Tiger habitat, where guests can catch a glimpse of Nakal and Dougra.

They even have school-specific trip packages available so you can be sure your students will be well looked after and catered for.

Outdoor Pursuits

The end of term means Summer is here and with that comes some (mostly) great weather! So, why not take advantage and allow the pupils to let off some steam in the great outdoors?

There are some amazing outdoor activities suitable for all age ranges, right on your doorstep, that will encourage students to engage physically as well as mentally.

Go Ape at Coombe Abbey

I’m sure at points in the academic year you’ve felt like the classroom has become a jungle, so this is the perfect way to let the little monkeys experience what it is really like to live among the trees!

A thrilling, challenging, unique, all-in-one activity – and once they have completed their Treetop Challenge, Coombe Abbey has 500 acres of woodland to explore.

Ackers Adventure Birmingham

Ackers incorporates a wide range of activities that encourage team building, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Their Enrichment Days incorporate a number of activities for students such as bushcraft, canoeing, skiing, and disc golf.

It’s the perfect place to have your classes learn something they otherwise would not get the opportunity to, whilst encouraging them to work well in groups.

Bear Grylls Adventure

One man who knows a thing or two about outdoor pursuits and their value to young people is the Chief Scout himself, Bear Grylls.

His Adventure Activity Centre at Birmingham’s NEC is designed to challenge kids physically and mentally by pushing them to go out of their comfort zones in a fun and safe way.

If you have a classroom of budding Errol Flynns or Katniss Everdeens, we suggest enquiring about their archery activity. And to add an extra layer of excitement, they can be hoisted 65ft in the air to tackle the high rope challenges.

Educational – but still fun – Trips

Although term will be drawing to a close, exams have been submitted, and the kids will be counting down to Summer, that doesn’t mean you can’t sneak in something educational!

Take a look at our ideas that, although they are great fun, will mean your students will leave having learned something a little more academic.

Warwick Castle

Over a Millenium of history adorn the stones of Warwick Castle. One of the oldest fortresses in the UK, Warwick Castle has held court for English aristocracy for most of its existence.

At the Castle, there are tours and workshops covering a variety of topics – from Norman life to sword and battle skills, to the wives of Henry VIII.

Commandery Worcestershire

At the very site where the most pivotal battle during the English Civil War was held sits the Commandery Museum, providing insight into the life and times of people living during the Stuart era.

The main attraction, however, is the armoury. With examples of the armour and weaponry used by both Royalists and Parliamentarians available to try on – bringing this momentous occasion in British history to life!

Shakespeare in Stratford

As you’ll surely know, William Shakespeare was a native of Stratford-upon-Avon. And if you’ve ever visited the town, you’ll know they aren't very subtle about it...

Stratford is full of homages to The Bard, from walking tours to museums to the RSC theatre.

There is even The Dell – a free-of-charge, open-air, performance of some of Shakespeare’s most famous works set to the backdrop of the River Avon in beautiful surroundings.

We at Johnsons know the level of effort teachers put into nurturing the next generation, and we thank you for it. Whatever you decide to do for your classes to mark the end of this academic year, we’re sure that they will appreciate it!

If you do decide to organise something outside of the classroom, Johnsons Coaches have a number of packages suitable for the Education Sector – including for those with SEN or accessibility requirements.
