Why Visit Manchester?

Date Added 15/08/2022

Home of the Hacienda, rival football teams and the 2002 Commonwealth games, Manchester has experienced extensive investment and regeneration, becoming notable for its architecture and culture.

It was once right at the heart of the Revolution, becoming the UK's leading producer of cotton and textiles. Manchester is also famous for being the first industrialised city in the world. Plus, did you know that Manchester was responsible for the country's first ever working canal in 1761 and the world's first ever railway line in 1830.

From it’s Science and Industry Museum to their Art Galleries, Manchester offers a wealth of speciality Museums each offering individual experiences for a wide range of interests.

There is always something going on within the hustle and bustle of the city, and luckily it can be FREE! Below are 3 examples of how you can make the most of your day for no costs at all:

1. Castlefield Viaduct is the brand-new ‘High Line’ gardens located on the historic Castlefield Viaduct and is completely free- all you need to do is book yourself a slot to visit on the National Trust Website. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/castlefield-viaduct

2. Discover Ordsall Hall and find out all about this ancient house while pretending you’re having a feast in the Great Hall. There are events held here all year round for all ages, and if the weathers nice, exploring their allotment, herb garden and sculptures makes for an idyllic afternoon.

3. Starting from the Alan Turing Memorial in Sackville Gardens, every day at 11am – the Free Manchester Walking Tours are exactly what they sound like – original, fun and informative walks that explore the city’s sights and secrets. Hosted by proper Mancs, the tour is an “informative and entertaining adventure” with something for everyone, whether you’re new to the city or not. Hidden gems, top attractions and everything else in between is covered.

But don’t just take our word for it, check out Johnson’s Excursions and see for yourself what Manchester has to offer!
